Custom business apps

Custom line-of-business apps for distributors.

I design and build web, mobile, and Windows desktop applications for wholesale and master distributors. Each one is built around a specific process in your business and connects to Prophet 21 or your other systems where it needs to. You get software that fits the way you work, not a package you bend your process around.

When custom software is the right answer

Custom is not always the right answer. If a process is the same at every distributor, a packaged product will usually do it cheaper. Custom earns its cost when the process is part of how you compete: the service your customers cannot get elsewhere, the way your area managers work, the rules your billing partner requires.

The test is simple. If you are running something important in a spreadsheet, on paper, or in one person’s head because no product fits, that is a custom software problem. The spreadsheet is not the failure. It is the evidence that the need is real.

What I build

  • Productivity apps for the field. Scanning and data-capture apps on handheld devices for people who work away from a desk, designed so the common task takes one step.
  • Portals for customer questions. Self-service access to the information your customers call and email about, so your inside team spends its time on work that needs a person.
  • Tools for your operators. Desktop and web applications that walk a trained operator through a critical process, check the work against your business rules, and explain what is wrong when something is.
  • Reports and workflows. The views that turn collected data into decisions for managers and owners.

How I approach a build

I start with the process, not the screen. I want to know who does the work today, what they know that is written nowhere, what goes wrong, and what happens when it does. Most of the value in a line-of-business app comes from getting those answers right. The code is the smaller half.

Then I build in stages you can see. You use early versions, tell me what is wrong, and the design adjusts while change is still cheap. You know where the project stands against the estimate the whole way through.

What this looks like in practice

Knowing what sells at every customer across seven states.

Wholesale distributor, seven-state region. Handheld scanning app, secure sync, web portal. About 2 months, still growing.

Customers who do not run out, and orders nobody re-keys.

Multi-state wholesale distributor. Desktop, web, and mobile apps feeding orders to P21. About 4 to 5 months.

Questions

Web, mobile, or desktop?

Whichever fits the person doing the work. A warehouse operator, an area manager in a customer's building, and a billing specialist at a desk need different things. Some projects need all three.

Does it have to connect to Prophet 21?

No, but most do. When it does, it uses P21's supported interfaces so it survives upgrades.

What about security?

Field and customer-facing apps are designed so your ERP database is never exposed to the internet. Users get the data they need, and nothing more.

Request a call back

Tell me about the process you are running in a spreadsheet

Tell me what is not working. I will tell you plainly whether it can be fixed, roughly what it would take, and whether I am the right person to do it.

  • One conversation, no obligation. There is no charge and no pitch.
  • A plain answer. If it is not feasible, or I am not the right fit, I will say so.
  • The first 30 days are guaranteed. If you are not satisfied and I cannot make it right, in your opinion, you get your money back.
